Hip Hop’s 10 Phattest Fat Rappers

Thursday June 25, 2009 8:00 AM

What’s better than a hip hop MC at the top of his game? A fat hip hop MC at the top of his game. The rap world is all about excess and some of the greatest rhyme artists of all-time have been excessively sized. There are so many reasons to love these super-sized wordsmiths including the creative way they manage to work their girth into their rap names. (If fat beats are your thing, be sure to check out beatboxer Shockwave’s Free Beats in the park experiment).

10. De La Soul
This eclectic hip hop trio has shown tremendous longevity. What they have not shown is a love of salads. They aren’t all fat – Posdnuos seems to have normal human proportions – but their combined weight puts most rap groups to shame.

9. Fat Joe
No, Fat Joe isn’t the plump Italian guy who delivers your pizzas. He’s the NYC-based MC and CEO of Terror Squad Records. We hope Terror Squad has a good health plan because we’re pretty sure there’s a quadruple bypass operation in his future.

8. Chubb Rock
This old school rapper had a couple minor hits in the early ‘90s. It was a far more innocent time in Hip Hop, when the dancers in the rap videos wore purple, and it was actually cool.

7. Dr. Dré
Although this less famous Dr. Dré didn’t have the prolific career as the Dre that we all know, he did have a bigger waistline. He did however, co-host the spring break episode of Yo! MTV Raps. Unfortunately for him, Spring Break in 1992 kind of sucked.

6. Prince Be (PM Dawn)
PM Dawn had a big hit in 1991 with “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.” But Prince Be’s real contribution to Hip Hop history was his status as the only rapper to wear a moo-moo.

5. Biz Markie
To one generation of hip hop fans, the Biz is either known for his crossover hit, “Just a Friend,” or his many appearances on the Beastie Boys’ albums. But really, he should be known for the sick beats that he teaches children on the show, Yo Gabba Gabba.

4. Big Pun
This guy may not have been the most successful fat rapper, but he may possibly have been the fattest. While other artists cemented their hip hop legend status by getting gunned down by rivals, Big Pun kept it real by dying the old fashioned way… by suffering a massive heart attack.

3. Heavy D.
The Heavy one had a plethora of talents. He sang, he rapped, he danced, he wore the most colorful suits the world has ever seen. The one thing he couldn’t do? Maintain a regular exercise regimen.

2. Notorious B.I.G.
Some called him Christopher Wallace. Others called him Biggie Smalls. What no one ever called him was svelte. His tragic murder didn’t stop him from continuing to release records as his posthumous discography rivals that of any great, dead musician large or small.

1. The Fat Boys
Hip Hop pioneers Prince Markie Dee, Kool Rock-Ski and the Human Beat Box knew a thing or two about dropping rhymes. They also knew how to fill out a t-shirt. But what they lacked in self-restraint, they made up for in talent. In addition to their mad rap skillz, they also knew how to make America laugh with box office hits like The Disorderlies. That film was a box office hit, right?
