We took it real old school for this. Don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of high top fades before this list is done. But we’re taking it back all the way to the Great Depression to get this started. We’ve got a chronology of all your favorite moves, and maybe a few you’ve never even heard of. We can’t dance for crap here, but if we could, all of these Top 10 Dance Moves In Hip Hop History would be in our repertoire.
10. The Snake
All the way back in 1935, Earl “Snake Hips” Tucker laid the ground work for pretty much every hip hop move you’ll ever see. Snake Hips makes Michael Jackson 1984 look like Michael Jackson 2009.
9. The Handstand
Damn. This guy from the 1940s sure did break it down like they do nowadays, and he didn’t even bother to take off his straw hat.
8. The Tootsie Roll
Just how many licks does it take to get to the center?
7. The Top Rock
If James Brown had been born about three decades later, the rest of y’all would just look stupid trying to Top Rock after him.
6. The Booty Pop
The only thing better than one booty popping is three booties popping. The only thing better than three booties popping is 20 booties popping in unison. Or 100 booties popping. We could go on with this all day long.
5. The Running Man
Shut up, you know you did it!
4. Krumpin
Krumpin is like your 4-year-old nephew breakdancing. An hour past his bedtime. On crack!
3. The Caterpillar
We remember when kids would do the Caterpillar in the hallways at school every hour, between class. Man, the world is going downhill.
2. The Cabbage Patch
That guy just took a minute and 38 seconds to describe how to do the cabbage patch. That’s one minute and 33 seconds more than you need.
1. The Fred
That really just happened. Mr. Rogers just did the wave in your FACE!
