In honor of the new season of Weeds, we could think of no better way to celebrate than to compile a list of songs about pot. Not just your average songs about weed. That would be too easy. Every college freshman knows all the words to “Legalize It.” We’re looking for the real dedicated stoners. So we’ve come up with a list of the more uncelebrated songs about pot in the history of singing about pot.
If you know the words to these songs, and have wondered who the biggest stoner you know is, it’s you!
If you own these songs, chances are all of your stoner friends get all of their pot from you.
10. Neil Diamond – The Pot Song
It’s mostly talking about nothing, which is exactly what smoking pot is like.
9. Cab Calloway – Reefer Man
You think you own weed songs? Your great grandparents’ music was about weed, too.
8. Brewer & Shipley – “One Toke Over The Line”
Woah. Jesus, Mary, maybe the whole Bible is about smoking pot, too!
7. Black Sabbath – “Sweet Leaf”
And here, we thought they just fancied a cup of tea.
6. Harlem Hamfats – “Weed Smoker’s Dream”
The day that someone invents a time machine, we’d like to go back in time and smoke weed with any man who called himself “Hamfats”.
5. K’s Choice – “Not an Addict”
You have to be pretty stoned to like K’s Choice, under any circumstances.
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd – “That Smell”
That smell is your unwashed hair, and the half-eaten pizza you stuffed under the couch “for later.”
3. Buck Washington – “Save the Roach for Me”
They really sang about pot a lot, back in the olden days, didn’t they? But they had to smoke it uphill, both ways!
2. Ella Fitzgerald – “When I Get Low, I Get High”
Get up, get, get, get down. Ella’s smokin’ all the dope in your town.
1. Shel Silverstein – I Got Stoned (and I missed it)
Now we know what exactly what the Giving Tree was giving.
