80s Anti-Drug And Alcohol Musical PSA Will Make You Want To Start Drinking Heavily

Thursday May 28, 2009 12:15 PM

If it weren’t for the wonders of YouTube, we would have started to question whether this 1989 Anti-Drug and Alcohol PSA Don’t Say Yes When You Really Mean No ever existed. You might already be familiar with this movie since it was available for free rental at Blockbuster back in the day. If not the premise of this musical turned movie is simple. 12 year old Jodie (who looks like she’s maybe 10 1/2) has a friend Kimmie’s party. It’s gonna be good clean fun there will be swimming and snacks and friends. Good times! But then the B.M.O.C. Mario (who looks like he’s been held back about seven times) invites Jodie to his party on the same day. Seems like a no brainer, go to the hot boy’s party, right? But wait, Mario’s party is going to have drinking and drugs. What will Jodie choose? What follows is an hour long drawn out decision of what party Jodie will go to. With probably the catchiest, kitchiest, most hilarious songs ever. They involve a lot of shout/singing. You know, where the kid shouts the lyrics instead of singing an actual tune.

The casting is amazing, the lighting is fascinating, the dream sequences would make David Lynch proud. The script features dialogue like “Whoever invented drugs is stupid.” “Yeah, and whoever takes drugs is stupider.” So kick back relax, pop open a cold one and enjoy songs like “Confused” with lyrics “Confusing here. Confusing there. Confusing EVERYWHERE!” and “Don’t Say Yes When You Really Mean Know” which has lines like: Don’t say yes when you really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really mean no. “Body Talk” and “I Can Do Anything I Want”. By the end of the musical, we promise you’ll be wanting these songs on your iPod—and a nice long drink. You’ll also find yourself pondering questions like, “What cool guy needs to beg people to come hang out and drink at his party?”, “If this movie is about making decisions shouldn’t you respect the decisions of those who decide to drink?” and “I wonder how many of these kids ended up in rehab?”

The rest of this fantastic PSA after the jump.
