Oh, Oprah! Look at how whimsical you are. You won’t let that thyroid condition, the economy, or your confusion of social networking sites Twitter and Facebook get you down. No way! You’re fancy free and blowing bubbles on the cover of your May issue of your own magazine. Here is our imagined playlist of what Oprah was groovin to during her photo shoot. We imagine it much like taking a look through your older aunt’s iPod, only if your aunt had “Oprah Money”.
#7 “Magic” by Robin Thicke. Oprah la-la-loves Robin big time. He’s one of her Favorite Things of the summer (as if you didn’t know). We’re sure she did that dance that she is doing here at :48 during the photo shoot just to get warmed up in front of the cameras.
#6 “Simply The Best” Tina Turner. Oprah turned to the camera assistant and told him, “You know Tina is a very, very close friend of mine and a wonderful talent. She told me that I was the inspiration behind this song. She said, ‘Oprah, you’re simply the best. Better than all the rest’. “
The other 5 after the jump.
#5 “I Just Called To Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder. Oprah’s assistant came into the studio. “Oprah, Stevie Wonder is on the phone for you.” Oprah demanded he be put on speaker. “Oprah, my lovely,” Stevie said. “I heard you were doing your cover shoot for May’s issue of O Magazine. I just had to call and sing you a little something to help set the mood for your pictures.” And then he did.
#4 “Golden” Jill Scott. After Stevie hung up Oprah had another assistant put on her A-Ha playlist (not of the band A-Ha, but of songs that had inspired her “A-ha Moments”. First on the list was this song by Jill Scott. Oprah then thought about Jill in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. She wondered if she had been young enough if she herself could have been the lead on the show. Then she pondered Botswana and if she should open another branch of her school there after all the scandals surrounding her school in South Africa die down.
#3 “Natural Woman” Aretha Franklin. This song came up next on Oprah’s iPod. Oprah forgot about Botswana and called her assistant over and told her to make a note about looking up how much it could cost to buy the hat Aretha wore to Barack’s inauguration. The assistant told Oprah that the Smithsonian actually wants it. Oprah then got very calm and very serious and said, “That’s. Not. What. I. Asked. You. Was. It. Now, go get me a Bob Greene Best Life approved smoothie!”
#2 “One Moment In Time” Whitney Houston. Oprah’s assistant came back with a smoothie. And the photographer took five. Once Mama Oprah’s blood sugar leveled out she was in a better mood and shared a special anecdote with her assistant. “Did you know this version of “One Moment In Time” was recorded especially for me?” “No, I did not know that”, said her assistant. “Yes, I had Gayle take my Oprah Winfrey Time Machine back to 1989’s Grammy Awards and we scooped up Whitney had her record it at Harpo Studios then dropped her back just before she went on stage. Best idea I’ve had since starting O Magazine!”
#1 Maya Angelou’s poem Still I Rise . “Wow, that’s an amazing story Ms. Winfrey,” said her assistant. Then this track came through Oprah’s iPod speakers. “Did I ever tell you that I one time had Maya Angelou over for brunch and she recorded an outgoing voice message on my answering with an impromptu poem about the splendor of aura?” “I did not know that,” said her assistant, lying. The photographer came back from his cigarette break and Oprah locked eyes with him and said, “What about bubbles! It’s my new favorite thing this week!!!!” And thus the May cover was conceived.
